5 minutes with… Pauline Briscoe

When you get 5 minutes in a room with celebrity makeup artist Pauline Briscoe, you want to get all the latest gossip… and beauty hacks… and beauty secrets. So we did…

  • What are the A/W beauty trends for this year? What should we all be wearing?
    1. I would say dark wines and plum lipsticks (matte) as well as browns. I also think this season is about less contouring and showing off more skin in its natural glow. I’d say this season is all about back to basics and carrying a more natural look.

  • What are your tips to keeping makeup fresh all day? How do you get rid of shiny face?
      1. Unfortunately, there’s no magical cure for getting rid of a shiny face permanently. It all depends on your skin type and the oilier your skin is, the more likely this will happen. I would say always use a primer before applying makeup to keep your skin matte, as well as a moisturiser that works for you. See a skin specialist to determine this but generally I’d advise:

        • Oily skin (usually always oily especially on the chin) avoid liquid foundation and use oil control pressed powder and/or loose translucent powder
        • Combination skin (usually oily around the T- Zone) use crème to powder to matte your T-zone as well as oil control pressed powder or translucent powder
        • Dry skin (usually dry patches and tight feeling skin) use hydrating moisturisers and liquid foundation with SPF to protect your skin

If all else fails, blot your face regularly.

  • You’ve done such amazing work on so many celebrities including Kelly Rowland and Serena Williams. Who have you not worked on that you’d kill to get into your chair?
    1. Rhianna. She has a really good face and looks like she’d be up for experimenting.

  •  What three makeup items should no woman leave home without?
      • Mascara – for bringing out your eyes and making you look awake
      • Blusher – to give you a fresh and instantly healthy glow (and you can also use it as eyeshadow)
      • lip-gloss or moisturiser – to keep your lips soft and moisturised

  • What else inspires you other than make-up artistry?
    1. The face – whoever I’m making up inspires me.

  • What do you love most about make-up?
    1. I like making look and feel beautiful.

  • Our key message at Fashion Fair (especially for women of colour) is to be unapologetically bold and unabashedly beautiful.  How does makeup help us to do this?
    1. Makeup gives women confidence to enhance their natural beauty. I’m all about not to masking your face or trying to make you look like someone else, but to enhance and embrace what you naturally have
